So this was the first year that The Merlin have been a PBH venue. They are run by Greene King Breweries and are a big Weatherspoonsy family-friendly food-serving sort of place with a huge function room upstairs.
It was clear that Greene King wanted to use PBH to help drive up custom and invested a lot in new comfy chairs for the audience and banners outside the building from July onwards promoting the shows inside.
The biggest problem was that The Merlin is so far away from the rest of the Fringe activity in the City Centre so casual audiences are just not possible. This is a destination venue and you have to work hard to get people in.
I know that others who played here complained about the tech and leaks but our show didnt need any tech and it was sunny all through our run so it really was a good venue for us.
