I did three shows in Leith Arches Hub, the three Mondays of the festival at 17:40. They went OK - reasonable numbers, average about 15 I think. It's a nice-sized space, but space around the 'stage' area very constricted. The pic is of Ezra Briggs (Dark Folk) whose show preceded mine on 11th Aug (he'd stepped in at the last minute to cover for someone who'd cancelled). The only loo in the place is directly behind him (covered by the curtain), so not really useable while someone is performing. It would be possible to do the gig unamplified in terms of the size/accoustic - but one has to contend with a very noisy cappucino machine, traffic noise from Leith Walk, etc etc. Oh, my first show was on the day of storm Floris - terrible racket from rattling window panes and blinds and the baristas had to take turns to lean on the main door from the inside to stop it blowing open. The PBH PA set up only included one mic, and I need two (voice + instrument), so had to go begging to Donna in Leith Arches out the back for an additional mic each week. Which was fine, although a bit stressful in terms of only having ten minutes max in which to plug it in and see if it worked! Oh, and although the timing of my show seemed to work well (lots of folk said it fitted in between afternoon/evening shows they were going to) on each week a lady appeared from upstairs where there's a Thai Massage place, at the end of her day, carrying her laundry bags down the stairs (just out of sight in the photo - behind Ezra and to the right). It meant her tiptoe-ing across in front of the performer - very quietly, but she did it mid-song, so a bit distracting. The baristas were very helpful throughout (and thanks to Donna for the extra mic).
